Yungang Grottoes

Located 16 km west of Datong City,Shanxi Province,first built 460 in the Northem Wei Dynasty. Yungang Grottoes include 254 grottoes, over 1,100 niches and 51,000 statues in an area of 400,000 sqm, extending one km from east to west. As representative works of the Northern Wei Dynasty, they reflect the characteristics of architecture, dress, music and dance as well as evolution of the Northern Wei Dynasty.Having met the criteria Nos1,2,3,4 for inclusion of cultural properties on the World Heritage List, Yungang Grottoes inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2001.
