Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui ? Xidi
and Hongcun
Located at Yixian in southern Anhui Province and laid out
carefully and skillfully from the 11th to the 12th century,
Xidi and Hongcun Villages possess 3600 well-preserved ancient
residences having integrated with surrounding mountain scenery,
waterscape and farmland. Known as "Chinese Utopia",
these villages still have simple and unaffected customs and
a wealth of cultural legacy, serving as remarkable examples
of villages in the mountainous areas in the lower reaches
of the Yangtze River. Having met the criteria Nos.3, 4, 5
for inclusion of cultural properties on the World Heritage
List, the Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui ? Xidi and Hongcun
were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2000.
