The Temple of Heaven
Constructed in 1420 AD and situated in Chongwen
District, Beijing City, the Temple of Heaven covers 2.73 sq.km.
and reveals consummate Ming and Qing architecture as well
as artistry. It was a place where the emperor of the Ming
and the Qing would come to perform ceremonies of worshipping
Heaven and praying for good harvests each year. The Round
Altar on the south and the Altar of Prayer for Good Harvests
on the north are linked up by a 360-meter-long wide pathway
known as the Divine Viaduct. In the middle of the northern
altar the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests with exquisite
beam-framing system and imposing elevation is a striking example
of royal ritual building complex. Having met the criteria
Nos.1, 2, 3 for inclusion of cultural properties on the World
Heritage List, the Temple of Heaven was inscribed on the World
Heritage List by UNESCO in 1998.
