Mt. Taishan
Lying in central Shangdong Province, Mt.Taishan,
called Daishan in ancient times, is close to the Yellow
Sea on the east and the Yellow River on the west. The ancient
Chinese regarded Mt.Taishan as the most prominent of China's
five sacred mountains. Emperors from different dynasties
officiated the rites of worshipping Heaven and Earth on
Mt. Taishan. Many men of letters, calligraphers and artists
climbed up the mountain, leaving numerous masterpieces behind.
Mt. Taishan is rich in cultural heritage as well as natural
heritage as evidenced by geological features resulting from
the earth crust movement, and by zoological and botanical
resources. Having met the criteria Nos.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
for inclusion of cultural properties and No.3 for inclusion
of natural properties on the World Heritage List, Mt.Taishan
was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1987.
