The Classical Gardens of Suzhou
The classical gardens of Suzhou are located at Suzhou City,
Jiangsu Province. Beginning from the Eastern Jin Dynasty,
garden builders had made replicas of natural scenery on a
small scale in urban areas and created exquisite garden-residences
which had been ideal places of habitability, combining beautiful
architecture, nature, arts and literary culture into a whole.
The classical gardens of Suzhou are brilliant specimens of
landscape gardens on earth with outstanding universal value
from the point of view of history, art and culture. Having
met the criteria Nos.2, 3, 4, 6 for inclusion of cultural
properties on the World Heritage List, the classical gardens
of Suzhou with the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering
Garden, the Master-of-Nets Garden and the Mountain Villa with
Embracing Beauty serving as typical examples were inscribed
on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1997.
