The Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and
the Kong Family Mansion
Located at Qufu City, Shangdong Province, the Temple and
Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion are the
large-scale building complexes which possess the temple complex
for worshipping Confucius and offering him sacrifices, the
mansion for descendants of Confucius to reside, and the cemetery
where Confucius and his dead descendants are buried. Kept
in a good state of preservation are more than 1300 noteworthy
buildings dating from various dynasties, 5000 stelae, 1700
age-old trees, 100000 hoarded cultural relics and objects,
60000 pieces of the Kong family archives from the Ming and
Qing Dynasties. The Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the
Kong Family Mansion are the embodiment of Confucianism in
architectural and artistic forms. Having met the criteria
Nos.1, 4, 6 for inclusion of cultural properties on the World
Heritage List, the Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the
Kong Family Mansion were inscribed on the World Heritage List
by UNESCO in 1994.
