Mount Qincheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Constructed by Li Bing, the Governor of Sichuan, in 256 BC
during the Warring States Period not far away from Chengdu
City, Sichuan Province, Dujiang Weir, the earliest irrigation
project in existence, consists of the Yuzui Dividing Dam,
the Feisha Weir and the Baoping Trunk Canal, diverting the
Minjiang River to the western Sichuan Plain for irrigation
purpose, and has created one of the most productive agricultural
areas. Nearby, there're the Two Kings Temple, the Pacifying
Billows Chain Bridge and other places of historic interest.
Noted for its serenity at home and abroad, the Qingcheng Hill
is one of the birthplaces of Taoism in China and boasts the
Jianfu Palace, the Tianshi Cave and the Shangqing Palace with
Taoist architectural features and a strong folksy flavor of
western Sichuan. Having met the criteria Nos.2, 4, 6 for inclusion
of cultural properties on the World Heritage List, the Qingcheng
Hill ? Dujiang Weir were inscribed on the World Heritage List
by UNESCO in 2000.
