It has unique geological and ecological features, rich cultural heritage, long-cherished Buddhist culture in particular. To the east of Mt.Emei is Leshan Giant Buddha carved out of the mountain under the Tang Dynasty. It is the highest and biggest carved image of Buddha on the stone under the sun, integrating Buddhist culture with the natural scenery. Having met the criteria Nos.1, 2, 6 for inclusion of cultural properties and No.4 for inclusion of natural properties on the World Heritage List, Mt.Emei and Leshan Giant Buddha were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1996.
