Longmen Grottoes

Longmen Grottoes are to be found in the side of cliffs on the east and west banks of the Yihe River in the suburbs of Luoyang City, Henan Province. Made artificially over a period of 400 years from the Northern Wei Dynasty in the 5th century and flourished from the turn of the 5th century to the mid 8th century that was a period of economic prosperity and cultural attainments in China, Longmen Grottoes boast 2345 grottoes of varying size, 110000 statues of Buddhist Deities, 60-odd stone pagodas, 2840 stelae and inscriptions, constituting an important part of calligraphy and grotto art treasures. Having met the criteria N0s.1,2,3 for inclusion of cultural properties on the World Heritage List, Longmen Grottoes were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2000.
