The Mountain Resort and Outlying Temples
Situated in Chengde City, Hebei Province, the Mountain Resort
consists of imperial palaces, imperial gardens and outlying
temples of magnificence. With an area of 5.64 sq.km., the
Mountain Resort, created by absorbing the characteristics
of places of historic interest of the country, is the imperial
resort of the Qing emperors and the largest imperial garden
of China. Modeled after lamaseries of Tibet and Xinjiang and
popularly known as Outlying Eight Temples, a half circle of
20 or so temple complexes covers 52 ha., symbolizing national
unity of different ethnic groups around the centralized government
in China. Having met the criteria Nos.2, 4 for inclusion of
cultural properties on the World Heritage List, the Mountain
Resort and Outlying Temples were inscribed on the World Heritage
List by UNESCO in 1994.
