The Great Wall
Constructed in about the
7th century BC and repaired several times in the centuries
that followed up to the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall is
one of brilliant feats of engineering in human history,
measuring 6700 km. and meandering across 9 provinces, municipalities
and autonomous regions in North China from the Hushan Mountain
on the west bank of the Yalu River and the Shanhaiguan Pass
by the sea in the east to the Jiayuguan Pass in the west.
The major sections of the Great Wall include the awe-inspiring
Shanhaiguan Pass, Badaling, Mutianyu and the Jiayuguan Pass
with numerous beacon towers. Having met the criteria Nos.1,
2, 3, 4, 6 for inclusion of cultural properties on the World
Heritage List, the Great Wall was inscribed on the World
Heritage List by UNESCO in 1987.
