The Potala Palace
The magnificent Potala Palace was constructed
in the 7th century AD on the Putuo Hill with an altitude of
3700 m. above sea-level in Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region.
The 13-storied main building is 115.703 m. high with a total
floor space of 138025 sq.m. Well-spaced and properly arranged
on the hill, the Potala Palace, enclosed by the walls painted
in red, white and yellow alternately, and roofed over with
brilliant gilt brass tiles, is an outstanding specimen of
Tibetan architecture with extremely high cultural value and
great power of artistic attraction. Having met the criteria
Nos.1, 4, 6 for inclusion of cultural properties on the World
Heritage List, the Potala Palace was inscribed on the World
Heritage List by UNESCO in 1994.
